After many years of being the country’s ’Yo-Yo’ Club, West Bromwich Albion seem to have finally settled in the Premier League. The Baggies made their debut in the Premier League in 2002 and have spent the last decade hopping between the Championship and the top flight. read more
But now, under young manager Steve Clarke, the Baggies finally look at home, rubbing shoulders with the country’s top clubs.
Albion fans haven’t had much to shout about when it comes to silverware. Although The Baggies have won the old First Division, 5 FA Cups and a League Cup, their last major honour came way back in 1968 when Baggies Legend Jeff Astle scored in Extra Time to beat Everton to the FA Cup.
After several years of decline, which saw them playing third tier football in 1992, Albion’s fortunes started to improve when Gary Megson was appointed in 2000. Megson guided the Baggies to the Premier League in 2002. West Brom were relegated in their debut season, but Megson guided them straight back up the following season before leaving The Hawthorns after a disappointing start to the 2004/05 season. With the club lying bottom at Christmas, Bryan Robson would replace Megson. On the final day of the season, The Baggies hosted Portsmouth needing a win, and other results to go their way to have any chance of staying up. A gutsy performance saw Albion win 2-0 and as news filtered through from the other games, Baggies’ fans knew they were safe and The Hawthorns erupted. West Brom are the only team to this day to survive in the Premier League after being bottom at Christmas.
After a couple more affairs with the Championship, West Brom now find themselves an established Premier League side and will look to improve on an impressive 2012/13 campaign under Steve Clarke.
