Sunderland’s greatest day and most recent success arguably came in 1973. Manager Bob Stokoe guided The Mackems to Wembley to face Leeds United. An Ian Porterfield strike, along with an inspiring display from goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery would insure a memorable FA Cup win for Sunderland.
After an incredible penalty shoot out defeat to Charlton in the 1998 play off final, 1999 saw Peter Reid guide Sunderland to the Premier League, totalling a massive 105 points tally on their way. In their first season in the Premier League, ’Super’ Kevin Phillips was the key man as he bagged a monumental 30 Premier League goals in his debut season, helping The Black Cats to an unexpected 7th place finish.
The years following would see Sunderland spend time in the Premier League and Division 1 (now ’The Championship’) before former player Naill Quinn would buy the club in 2006. Quinn appointed Roy Keane as manager with Sunderland sitting bottom of The Championship, but with a nice cash injection, Keane would guide Sunderland straight back to the Premier League at his first attempt.
Sunderland have since gone on to become an established Premier League side, proving very hard to beat at the Stadium of Light. With eccentric Italian manager Paolo Di Canio now in charge, The Mackems will look to climb the table and maybe have a go at winning some long awaited silverware.
