After a 23 year absence, Stoke City returned to English footballs top flight in 2008 after finishing runners up in The Championship. In that time, The Potters have gone on to become a strong force in the Premier League and the Brittania Stadium is a place no team looks forward to visiting. read more
Stoke first became a force in English football in the 1930’s, that was heavily thanks to their most celebrated player, Stanley Matthews. After making his debut in 1932, Matthews would go on to become an England international and almost help Stoke win the First Division in 1936.
Stoke’s only major honour to date came back in 1972 where they overcame a strong Chelsea side 2-1 to win the League Cup, this enabled The Potters to make their debut in European football the following season.
In 1998, Stoke moved from the Victoria Ground to the Brittania Stadium, however, it would not improve Stoke’s fortunes as they were relegated to Division Two the same year. After a takeover from Stoke Holding, and Icelandic Consortium, Gudjon Thordarson was put in charge and guided Stoke back to the First Division (now The Championship) in 2002.
In 2006, former Chairman, Peter Coates would takeover over the club and soon appoint former boss Tony Pulis to take charge of the team. Pulis would soon make an impact, guiding The Potters to The Premier League for the first time in 2008. After two impressive mid-table finishes, Stoke would surprise everyone by going on to reach the 2011 FA Cup Final, after destroying Bolton Wanderers 5-0 in the semi final. Unfortunately Stoke would miss out 1-0 to a side packed with some of the world’s finest talent.
Stoke are currently enjoying their sixth season in The Premier League and with rock solid centre halves in Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth, The Potters have a powerful defence to build a top side around. With a new manager in charge, a difficult season beckons for Stoke, but with vital Premier League experience, Mark Hughes will look to make his mark and guide Stoke up that table.
