Welcome to The Scottish Premier League (SPL) which is Scotland´s primary football competition.
Similar to England, the SPL was formerly known as the First Division and later the Premier Division before the Scottish Premier League was formed in 1997, five years on from the Premier League being formed in England.

With the SPL placed 18th in the UEFA rankings, only the Champions can now qualify for the following seasons Champions League with the runner up entering the Europa League. The bottom placed team is relegated to the Scottish First Division with the respective champions coming the other way.
The SPL has been home to some great players throughout the years. Ronald De Boer, Henrik Larsson, Paul Gascoigne, Giovanni Van Bronkhorst and Roy Keane are just a few names who have entertained the Scottish crowds.
It is well known that Scottish football has traditionally been dominated by the Glasgow sides Celtic and Rangers. Both sides have battled it out at the top of the SPL for years until Rangers´ recent misfortunes seen them drop into the 4th tier of Scottish football. Rangers, and football fans in general will hope the Gers make a quick return to the top flight for another set of Old Firm clashes with Celtic. Fans around the world tune in when these two get together in a match that never fails to disappoint. The competition in the SPL however is still fierce and the passion of the fans in Scotland is second to none.
With Rangers currently applying their trade in the 2nd division, there are 11 other SPL sides who will hope to make a push towards the top of the table. Motherwell ran Celtic close for a lot of the 2012/13 season but unfortunately couldn´t last the pace. This will have shown a glimmer of hope for any other side with European aspirations so anyone who thinks the SPL title is a foregone conclusion is sadly mistaken.
