Since it´s inception in 1992 (after changing names from The Football League First Division), only 5 teams have won the Premier League, these are Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers and most recently Manchester City who won the league in the final seconds of the 2011/2012 season after Sergio Aguero´s strike against Queens Park Rangers.
The league consists of 20 teams who play a total of 38 games each. The top 3 placed teams qualify for the following seasons Champions League, with the 4th placed team entering the qualifying stages for the competition. The team who finishes 5th qualifies for the Europa League, 6th and 7th placed teams could also qualify depending on who wins the countries domestic cup competitions. At the end of each season the bottom 3 teams are relegated to the Championship with 3 teams coming the other way. The winner of the Premier League traditionally opens the new season each year by playing the winner of the FA Cup in the Community Shield.
Anyone who has watched the Premier League over the years will tell you more great goals than you could care to remember. Tony Yeboah´s famous ´crossbar and in´ against Liverpool, Paulo Di Canio´s bicycle kick against Wimbeldon and Wayne Rooney´s overhead volley against Manchester City are just 3 that come to mind. Any goal scored similar to these at grass roots level will be named straight away as a ´Yeboah´ or a ´Di Canio´ by people all around the country; such is the impact the Premier League has had in England.
Manchester United hold the record for the most league wins with 20 titles (including 7 as the old ´First Division´), overcoming Liverpools record of 18 in 2011. Alan Shearer is the all time top goal scorer with an impressive 260 goals, the majority coming when he was at Newcastle United. The most expensive transfer was when Chelsea splashed £50million on Spanish striker Fernando Torres from Liverpool in 2011, and the most a club has received was when Manchester United accepted a world record £80million from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.
The Premier League is more than just a football competition; it´s what brings friends and family together to attend the match, for an afternoon at home or a day down the local pub. It´s the line between having a great weekend or a bloody miserable one. It is a talking point for strangers who meet, you see a bloke walking down the street wearing your teams colours and you feel obligated to say hello, this isn´t strange – it is English football, and we love it.
