Norwich were also founder members of the Premier League in 1992. The Canaries’ fans also love to remind everyone that their favourite chant ’On The Ball City’ in the oldest football chant in the world.
Between 1985 and 1994 was arguably Norwich’s most successful period. They won the League Cup in ’85, and in the inaugural Premier League season, they ran Manchester United and Aston Villa very close, finishing a very impressive 3rd. This saw Norwich qualify for the UEFA Cup, which fans still talk about to this day. The Canaries went out in the 3rd round to Inter Milan but it was their 2nd round efforts, which lives long in the memory.
Under manager Mike Walker, Norwich travelled to German giants Bayern Munich, winning 2-1 and becoming the only British team to go to the Olympic Stadium and leave victorious.
Walker resigned in January 1994 and after a 12 placed finish that season, Norwich were relegated from the Premier League in 1995. After an uncertain decade and a couple of bites at the cherry, The Canaries returned to the top flight in 2004 under Nigel Worthington, unfortunately only lasting one season before a final day 6-0 loss to Fulham sent them to the Championship. Two years on and goalkeeping club legend Bryan Gunn couldn’t save The Canaries from dropping to the 3rd tier of English football.
The first game of the 2009/10 season in League One saw Norwich hammered 7-1 at the hands of Paul Lambert’s Colchester United. This saw Norwich part company with Gunn and surprisingly appoint Lambert from Colchester. Lambert proved an instant hit at Carrow Road, achieving back to back promotions, and taking Norwich back to the Premier League.
Chris Hughton took over in 2012 and is currently enjoying life at Carrow Road, a strong home record has seen Norwich have a fairly comfortable season and will look to keep Norwich marching up the league table.
