The FA Cup is England´s primary football cup competition, and is also the oldest football competition in the world.
Each season, the knock out competition begins in August where teams from 9 divisions below the football league can enter. Preliminary rounds occur until 32 non-league teams qualify for the First Round. Here they are joined by the 48 teams who make up Leagues Two and One. 64 teams make up the Third Round which takes place in the first week in January. Each round after takes place during the Premier League season with the final at Wembley traditionally taking place the week after the season ends. The eventual winner is rewarded with a place in the following seasons Europa League. Should the winner finish in the top 5 in the Premier League, then the losing finalist receives the Europa League place. The winner also earns a place to play the Premier League champions in the Community Shield in August.

A huge target for the non-league sides is to reach the Third Round where the teams from the Championship and the Premier League enter the competition. Crawley Town achieved this in 2011 and were rewarded with a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. The FA cup is well known for its famous upsets and "giant killings". With every league and many non-league teams pitted against each other, there´s always chance of an upset which creates the magic of the FA Cup.
Although they haven´t won it since 2004, Manchester United have the record for the most FA Cup wins with 11. Chelsea have recently dominated the competition, lifting the trophy in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012 and the magic of the FA Cup struck once again in May 2013 when soon-to-be-relegated Wigan Athletic beat a strong Manchester City side 1-0 in the final.
The FA Cup has provided some of the best football memories for fans up and down the country, friends get together and talk of the great games of the past, many even meet up for the Third Round draw with the excitement of who their team will get. Great final memories such as Eric Cantona´s late winner in ‘96, Roberto Di Matteo´s strike in ’97, Michael Owen´s brace in 2001 and The "Steven Gerrard Final" in 2006. Barnsley fans will remind you of their heroics in 2008 where they knocked out Liverpool and Chelsea, and most recently non-league Luton Town who shocked everyone by defeating Premier League side Norwich City in 2013.
