Everton‘s most successful period came during the mid-late 80‘s. Howard Kendal guided the blue Merseysiders to 2 league titles, an FA Cup and the European Cup Winners Cup in the years 1984-1987. Their greatest player of that era was arguably their goalkeeper, Neville Southall. The Welshman was outstanding between the sticks and won himself the Football Writers Association Footballer of the Year award in 1985. Southall served Everton for 17 years.
Everton‘s most recent silverware came back in 1995. The Toffees went into an FA Cup Final, huge underdogs against a strong Manchester United side . An intense battle saw Paul Rideout head in the only goal of the game and Dave Watson lift the cup for the blues.
In recent times, Everton have proved themselves to be a solid outfit that very few teams look forward to playing. Davd Moyes took charge in 2002, and has gained the respect of his peers by the way he has steadied the blues into the impressive team they are today. In 2005 he guided Everton to their highest Premier League position of 4th and qualified for the Champions League. In 2009 Everton went all the way to Wembley to the FA Cup Final, eventually losing 2-1 to Chelsea. It is no secret that Moyes hasn‘t exactly had bags of cash at his dispersal, but the fiery scot has built an impressive, strong squad. His efforts have put him on the map as one of the games top managers, and has seen him become a target for some of Europe‘s biggest clubs.
Moyes' outstanding efforts at Everton attracted interest from Europe's top clubs which eventually seen him replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. Everton quickly moved and replaced Moyes with young Spanish manager Roberto Martinez who, after winning the 2013 FA Cup with Wigan, will be hungry for more success at the mightier Everton.
