The UEFA Champions League is the top football competition in Europe and arguably the world.
Prior to 1992, the competition was simply known as the "European Cup" (and still is by many fans) and was strictly a knockout competition for the Champions of each European nation. As the 1990´s progressed, the competition expanded and now up to four teams from Europe´s major leagues can qualify.

After 32 teams have qualified, the competition begins with 8 groups consisting of 4 teams in each group. Each team plays each other twice with the top 2 from each group qualifying for the last 16. The team that finishes 3rd enters the UEFA Europa League in the final 32 stage and the 4th placed team exits European football altogether. Once the final 16 is decided, 2 legs are played home and away through every round until the final where one game will decide who the new champions of Europe are. The winners of the competition go on to enter the FIFA World Club Championship usually held in January where they compete against the respected winners of each continental competition.
With up to 4 teams entering from the same country, it frequently occurs that 2 clubs from the same nation face each other. The first time this occurred in the final was in 2000 when Real Madrid faced Valencia. Juventus V AC Milan was the 2003 final and 2008 saw Chelsea face Manchester United. The first all German final took place in 2013 when Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund went head to head.
The Champions League is the ultimate goal at club level for any professional footballer. It is where you´ll find the finest talent in the world such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Andreas Iniesta. Clubs are desperate to qualify for the competition as the lure of Champions League football is often too good for players to resist. It is so important that managers of clubs are now suggesting that finishing in the top 4 is equally as important as winning a trophy, and are even sacrificing silverware in attempts to reach the Champions League.
Real Madrid hold the record for the most European Cup wins with 9, this is followed by AC Milan with 7 and Liverpool with 5, their most recent being the unforgettable final in 2005 where they fought back from 3-0 down against AC Milan and lifted the trophy after winning on penalties. Since the competition became the "Champions League" in 1992 no club has ever managed to defend the trophy successfully, Manchester United came closest to doing so in 2009 but were defeated 2-0 by Barcelona in the final.
